International “Talk Like a Pirate Day”
It may be fun to talk like a pirate, but it’s important to remember that you shouldn’t eat like one! Although not as common as it was 200 years ago, scurvy - a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency, is still a risk for individuals on the autism spectrum, particularly children, who may be more selective about food due to sensory issues.
This paper presents data collected from Boston Children’s Hospital over a period of 20 years to, identifying seven children diagnosed with scurvy, and of those children all of them were male and exhibited a developmental disorder, and over half of them were on the autistim spectrum.
