Solar Cause of Increased Aurora

The Northern and Southern Hemispheres have witnessed some spectacular aurora displays this week, and if you feel like the frequency of these events is increasing, you’re not wrong!

This recent study from scientists at NASA show that for approximately 20 years preceding 2008, there was a significant decrease in solar wind and other measurements. However, in the years since 2008, this study shows a reversal of the decline in solar wind activity, and when comparing data from 2008 with that from 2025, there have been large increases in a range of solar wind proton parameters, leading to more frequent and stronger auroras on Earth than have occurred in recent memory.
